can some one give me some idea of the price of drinks in the bars and also the cost of meals outside the hotels this is my first visit to phuket

To answer your question (probably not the way you want!), the price really does vary on where you go. I have had many a top class meal, in the open air, listening to a band, and the price would be around 49baht (special offer) for beer, to get you in. Then a steak would cost about £6 or £7. Other 'normal' meals would cost about £4.
This was in an excellent place. I dont know where you are from (probably not england), so the price for steak would be about 450 - 500 baht (convert this into where ever you are from). I normally would eat just as good quality food at a road side food shop for about 60 baht (£1 !).
To give you a comparison, I stayed in a semi-large apartment, with air-con, en-suite, refridgerator for 700 baht per night ! (steak 500 baht!).
I would never claim to know it all about Thailand or Patong, but I have been there for over 6 weeks in total.
If you are with your woman and you want a really nice time, you can have it, AND CHEAP!
If you are with 'the boys' and are prepared to 'slum it ' a little bit, then you can live for MEGA CHEAP.
Dont get caught in the trap of going somewhere else because it is 50 baht cheaper. It means nothing. Go, have fun, and be impressed by some things which you have probably never felt physically or emotionally in your life.
Remember it is VERY different.
If you are on your own, or with the lads, make sure all the sex you have is safe. If you are going with your lady, and you get pissed, make sure all the sex she has is safe.. (joke)
