I went there last year with some friends. It was one of my favorite trips. Like most people who go to KK, we went to climb Mt. Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in SEAsia. The scenery along the climbing is very impressive, and the view from the top at sunrise is something you'll remember. You need to be reasonably fit to do the climb, the distance isn't far but it is steep. Doing stair climbs is better than jogging to prepare yourself. You can arrange the climbing trip through your travel agent before you go or make arrangements in KK. As for the town of KK, it was nothing special. A good place to celebrate after the climb before heading home. They have a few nice places to eat and the sunsets along the water edge are nice. People were very friendly, but we were warned that there are sections of town that are not safe to wander around at night. After the climb, our legs were too weak to test that out and we were happy to just sit, drink beer and celebrate our conquest of the mountain.
