Our flight to Krabi on March 26 from Singapore was the first to leave from the newly opened Budget Terminal. Checked in at 0500 hours and flight took off at 0645 hours to lot's of fanfare. I was surprised to find so many amenities inside the departure lounge....duty free shop, free internet, money changer, bookshop, food outlets.
Got back from Krabi on March 29. First time there and it certainly is different from Phuket. Ao Nang is heaps quieter than Patong. Anyway, I enjoyed the slower pace.
The weather was very hot and it rained one afternoon when we were there. Heavy downpour. Then, another heavy thunderstorm on one of the nights.
We stayed at Krabi Sands Resort in Klong Muang beach. It is a 15 minute drive to Ao Nang. The taxi fare is THB400 each way which I found a bit steep considering we went down to Ao Nang twice.
It took us about 35 minutes to reach the resort from the spanking new Krabi International airport and on the way to the resort, we drove past Sheraton Krabi, Andaman Holiday Resort and Nakamanda. There are shops and restaurants outside of Sheraton and Andaman. Closer to Sheraton, there is a shopping plaza.
I made arrangements with Krabi Sands to pick us up from the hotel and that cost THB800. The resort is cosy and quiet. There were only 4 other bungalows occupied when we were there. The pool is not huge...but lovely to dip in. And after a hot day walking in Ao Nang, the pool is refreshing.
We had a room where we only needed to take 10 steps out and step right into the pool....my 3 year old enjoyed herself in the pool. There is no bath in the bathroom. A rain shower though is what we got. TV reception is not too good and there is no cable TV, only local channels.
Breakfast is provided with the room at the Beach Restaurant (where the resort's meals are served) and it is located across the road. The restaurant is on the beach side whereas the resort is not. I didn't find the breakfast much to shout about....you get the basic bacon and eggs or fried rice or rice porridge plus cereals and juices. What I didn't like at all were the flies around the breakfast counter where the bread, fruits and cutlery were placed.
We had room service the first night as it rained cats and dogs. Food was edible but nothing to shout about. Ordered Kao-Phad Gai (Fried Rice with Chicken) and Kway Teow Rat-na (Fried white flat noodles with gravy). Bill came up to THB253. Eaten better in Hatyai & Chiang Mai.
We walked to Paddy's Irish Pub (at the entrance of Krabi Sands, turn left and walk for 5 mintues) for dinner the 2nd night and the food was delicious. They serve Thai food too but we decided to go for Pork Chops and Lamb Chops.
On our last night at Krabi, I asked for recommendations and we were brought to a seafood restuarant in Ao Nang called Wangsai. Dinner was good...had grilled lobster, steamed mussels, stir fried vegetables, fried noodles and banana in coconut milk for dessert. An excellent meal..bill came up to THB1,510.
After dinner, we walked along Ao Nang to soak in the sights. There were the usual wares on sale, DVD, handbags, watches, T shirts, swim suits but we didn't do any shopping. This Krabi holiday was purely to wind down and have quality family time. And Krabi certainly didn't fail us. We loved it.
And we're off to Phuket for Songkran.
