I am planning to go diving from Phuket at the beginning of january for 2 days. I am leaning towards a 1 night/2 day liveaboad however am also considering doing day dives from phuket. What do you recommend? Is it worth going to the Simians for such a short time? How is the diving around Phuket compared to the Simians?

There are some nice dive sites near Phuket, but the ones in the Similans are nicer. If you can manage it, my advice is to do the liveaboard, even if it is only for two days.

Yes, Similans is worth it.

We just had a few guests returning from a liveaboard who did one Phuket daytrip after the liveaboard though, and they said they preferred the daytrip. So it also is personal.

Any idea why the guests preferred the day trip over the liveaboard?

I am also exploring the pros and cons of a day trip (twice) near Phuket vs a 2 night liveaboard.

Marine sightings (they saw 2 leopard sharks mating on the daytrip), visibilty was excellent on the daytrip (can vary a lot), plus the travel to the Similans is quite far with bus transfer and speedboat, even on a 2 days trip (much better on 2 days than on a daytrip though).
