Hi, I was heading to Phuket for a day with my girlfriend. She has never dived, and I have only once. We are flying into Phuket for one day, leaving on the same day. She really wants to dive (just a shallow beach dive, for an hour or so) The problem is the flight back to bangkok (about an hour and a half flight) is only 7 hours after the short dive. We don't have much time, but she really wanted to try diving. Does this sound too risky for Decompression sickness (DCS)?

Also I heard you can buy oxygen inhalers to help stop DCS? We are both slim, won't drink alcohol, avoid oily foods, take hot showers, drink coffee or soda, after the dive. Would it still be unsafe, or nothing to worry about if we are careful?

No reputable shop or instructor would take you diving if they knew you had a flight so soon after the dive. While we do use oxygen as a first-response measure in cases of dive accidents, including DCS, we do not simply breathe oxygen in order to subvert the guidelines concerning flying after diving.

My advice: either stick to snorkeling or change your flight.

You have 2 options: tell the divecenter the truth and you won't be allowed to go diving; or lie and don't tell them you're flying out so soon. If you opt for the latter, excellent chance you'll both end up in hospital.

Don't do it.

Maybe you could organise a pool dive for beginners at your hotel in Bangkok. You obviously know the dangers of diving then flying, makes me wonder why you would fly to Phuket to have a dive for a biginner then fly back to Bangkok.

Diving after flying is really enjoyable and fun but it will be something seems to be risky.Did you dive out like this earlier? If you did,it will be easy for you to do it with that experience.Anyhow, all the best and enjoy the trip.
