We want to hire a motorbike, we dont want to leave our passports. Do we really need an international licence, or can we just use our Australian motorbike licence? can anyone recommend place to hire?
Thanks

Motorbike hiring here is not a good idea.

Firstly, no matter what the vendor tells you, the bike will not be insured. That means that if you have an accident any costs for medical bills, and any costs for bike repair/replacement will have to be paid by you.

This can happen even if you are not the party to blame.

Unfortunately there's been many a ruined holiday here just because of the above. Added to that there are lots of fatalities here from accidents involving bikes.

As stated in a post above many Thais don't have licences, and therefore don't know some of the 'rules of the road' which leads to some rather odd driving habits - whether they're driving a motorbike or ten wheel truck.

Hi there Case,

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with Stuart his a global statement that hiring a motor bike is not a good idea.

Yes, Stuart is correct about the insurarnce & legal aspects of renting a bike but thousands of visitors regularly rent a motor bike every time they holiday in Phuket and we have regular customers who just can't wait to rent on eof our bikes.

On a more serious note there are typical 15 motor bike deaths each month but a careful, cautious & sober driver will usually be Ok.

An international drivers licence is the legal requirement but if your home licence has a photo then that's usually accepted by the police.

Any question about bike rental then email us direct.
