Hi I have visited Krabi on two occasions both for 3 weeks. We did not want to be right on the beach so we found a very pleasant resort about 800 mts from beach. It is owned by an American, Robert (Gus)and his Thai wife Pat. They offer free rides to beach if required. Here is their web site:
http://www.laithai-resort.com The pages contain very useful Tel numbers and information about the Krabi area. Please mention us to them. Oh yes say hello to their son Thomas for us.
Krabi is really province and covers a very large area so Ao Nang is the best place to stay,in our opinion. You are able to take a 'long-tail' boat to numerous beaches from 40bht for a quick trip to closer beaches to 700 bht for 5 island daytrip. I think price to Phi Phi from Phuket and Ao Nag is about the same as is the distance but I think it's much better from Ao Nang because the boats leave direct from Ao Nag beach so there is no motor ride. Recommend a speed boat to Phi Phi takes about 45-60 mins. If you go on a bigger boat it will take much longer. Just check what you get for your money. We went on an large organised trip with lots of people with lunch included, lunch was awlful but the price included a trip to the Viking Cave(don't miss)and the Island where 'The Beach' was filmed. Down side of trip was we only had 2 hours on Phi Phiand it took nearlt 2 hrs to get back to Ao Nang (big boat against the wind)
Islands not to be missed: Kho Hong and Poda. Give James Bond Island a miss.
Hope this helps Ray & Rita Fairclough
