Park Royal renovated few years back and rooms are bigger, but no balcony.
Golden Sands rooms are smaller, you can choose sea view rooms with balcony or garden rooms without balcony.
For kids i rather stay at Park Royal, nicer kid pool too. Rates also cheaper.
Both are close by, walking distance and both have night markets just outside the hotel. Many restaurants and pubs outside too.
Both are situated at the beach, so going down to town might take bout 20 minutes depending on traffic. You will arrive at Gurney Rd 1st and the famous hawker center there. Shopping at Gurney Plaza is also nice.
