Is it worth organising a day trip to Langkawi from Penang? What is the best way to get over there and roughly how much.

By Sea
Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 minutes respectively. From Penang to Langkawi the ferry takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

Sorry, dont remember the ticket price. Also if the sea if rough, you might get sea sick.

As for sightseeing and stuff, try this website...http://www.langkawi.com.my/Sight-Seeing.html

NO, its not worth the trouble for a day trip.

Langkawi is an idyllic island without much attraction, and is best appreciated by staying there and doing practically nothing except lazing around at the resorts.

The ferry can be quite uncomfortable and can take 3-4 hrs each way. MH has only one daily flight with the return flight on the same aircraft less than 1hr after arrival, hence a day trip is not possible by flying.

If you are able to extend your entire holiday by a day, I would suggest reducing your stay in Penang by one night and fly to Langkawi. Stay at a nice resort for 2 nights before proceeding to your next intended destination.

While in Langkawi, you can spend 1/2 day doing some "light" sightseeing like taking the cable car up Gunung Mat Cincang for a panoramic view, or going to the main promenade near Kuah where the gigantic "Eagle" statue is located.
