Hi as a Dive Master working on Samui I would like to say come here but for the best price about 12000 to 15000 bht then head for Kho Tao there is not a lot of night life but the dive is much better.
Flight to Samui and then Seatran to Koh Tao.
But if you want to dive and have a great night life then come to Samui boat to dive site takes a bit longer but the night life is great

The prices on Phuket are about 12,000 Baht for the open water course, which will take you 4 days. This includes certification, equipment rental, basically everything.
From Phuket the divesites will be Racha Yai normally, sometimes also Racha Noi or Bida Nai and Bida Nok in the Phi Phi area.

Hey

I have dived all over thailand and recommend PP as the best location so far. PP is located in the Andaman Sea fed by the indian ocean so has a greater number of species of fish so more chance of seeing sharks and turtles woohoo.

I dived with Princess divers who are safety conscious, highly experienced and heaps of fun. They were the most affected dive shop from the tsunami and princess resort is only just in the process of being rebuilt. For this reason the dive shop is quiet at the moment so well worth checking out. PP as an island is also fantastic - whether you want to party the night away or relax and take in the breath taking scenery

I arrived 4 months ago and still can't seem to leave!

If you need any other advice please let me know

sorry stevie cant really agree with u there considering there r at least 7 nightclubs all along the beach on tao (lived there for 2 yrs) not to mention 32 dive centers lots of mixed race restaurants all offering great food. tao is very very cheap compaired to pp went last week not as nice as used to be. really expensive. rent rooms by night only not 4 long time.(most of them anyway) + out of season for tao now so phuket is better in dec..

you should really get a grasp of figures and facts before you post.

those prices on Tao, nope. Phuket maybe with the more expensive dive centres but Tao is more like 10k. dive sites are the same, last i looked samui didn't have any all the boats went to Tao to dive, unless you count Sail Rock.

If someone that is new to diving posts a query rather than talking about your perceptions of nightlife it might be better if you actually stated the facts

something along the lines of the diving is good for training in Tao but not fanatstic, thats its relatively cheap, popular with travelers, there is accommodation for all budgets, there is lots of nightlife ( maybe you need to read "how to make friends etc)

other than that you could have ponited out that Phuket is about the same price for the course if you shop around, there is LOADS of nightlife and other things to do, the divingis waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better and there is accommodation for all tastes there as well

have fun diving
