We will be in Ao Nang for a week in June, from there we go to Koh Samui, this is the only transport we don't have booked. Has anyone driven to the ferries from Ao Nang or Krabi.
How long is the drive, should we take transport, what transport would you advise, bus, car & driver etc; what sort of cost would we be looking at. Is it safe to drive ourselves and can we do a one way hire dropping the car in Samui after a few days. Which is the better of the ferries.
The other option is to take transport to Phuket airport and fly to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways. How long is the drive to Phuket and again what transport options do we have.Which option would you choose and why
Thank you

Hi Colleen
A few questions to anwser there. First of all my opinion would be to get there the quickest way possible, So in that you would be looking at going to Phuket and flying direct to samui. You have really two options getting to the airport either drive a car from Ao nang or organise a car with driver. I think for ease and less hassle you would be better of with a car and driver.
Now with some of those other questions, you can hire a car and do a one way drop off. The drive/ferry ride would take most of the day and I would suggest you allow for 3.5 to 5.5 hours give or take driving from Ao nang depending on any breaks and getting your bearings. The roads are excellent I have to say but it is still a long drive.
Then you have at least 1.5 to 2.5 hour ferry ride and another 45 min drive once on the island to chaweng. Sometimes you may have to wait for the next ferry which could be another hour or so. This would be the same with a driver/bus and I think the time would be better spent at your destination rather than travelling.

Thank you Darrin,
Do any airlines fly from Krabi to Surat Thani, if not do you know how long to drive from Ao Nang to Phuket airport as Bangkok air only have 2 flights a day. Thank you again.

Hi Colleen
There are still no direct flights between Krabi and Samui to my knowledge. As for the drive from Krabi to phuket airport you should expect it to take approx 1 and a half hours.
Cheers, Darrin.

Darrin, don't like to correct you, but you would need a racing driver at the wheel to do Krabi/Phuket Airport in 90 minutes. I myself have driven that route many times and I would allow 2 and half hours as the roads over in Krabi Provence are not that good/fast.
In my opinion it's not that much longer to drive from Krabi to Surat Thai, then further on to Don Sak for the ferry. I would say 3 hours from Krabi to Surat and another 30+ minutes to Don Sak. If you have a car it's worth going to Don Sak as the ferry crossing is less than one hour, with ferries every hour.
I myself would take the public bus (VIP/air con bus)from Krabi Town to Surat, and then take the ferry from Surat over to Nathon. Very cheap and really not that much longer than Krabi/Phuket and fly to Samui.

Have done that trip many times now and have managed to be at the airport within 1 and a half hours, driving sensibly. Have done Ao nang to patong in just under 2 and a half hours in the afternoon, no stops and driving sensibly again. As I said APPROX 1 and a half hours and I would not expect Colleen to do similar times, but as I suggested would very much expect a thai driver taking them from Ao nang to phuket airport to do it. Normally I would always over estimate the times on journeys for people making there own way but if it is a local driving then I give the times with APPROX as close to the times I have also done the trip.
