Hi everyone
We have just come back from Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket) and are now planning our next holiday. We would love to go to Malaysia (KL then an island for a beach stay for a few days). Can anyone tell us which would be the best island for two middle age adults and three teenagers, Penang or Langkawi.
We loved Phuket but we stayed in Kata not Patong, so obviously something with Kata's level of 'busyness' is probably what we are after.
Looking forward to your replies.

Have been to both. Langkawi very quiet I think teenagers would find it too slow. If you go to batu ferringi in Penang you are more into what you will find at Kata which we stayed at last year. At batu ferringi you have a wide choice of eateries and the night markets right at your door. A lot of Aussies stop at the Golden Sands we have been there twice. They have a shuttle which takes you into Penang town about 4 times a day.We are in our fiftys and found Langkawi very quiet although it suited us at the time because hubby was just getting over illness. You can go to Langkawi on a a day tour on the ferry hope this helps. Rusty

Thanks for your reply Rusty7, that is really helpful. What is the beach like at Batu Ferringi, from other forums I have read I have heard it is not very good, and I want to be able to spend some time on the beach sunbaking and swimming.

The beach is okay for sunbathing as the previous post says no good for swimming you are warned about the jelly fish on all beaches. Rusty

Hi djh, I would recommend Penang Island as appose to Langkawi as per your general needs and wants stated in your earlier post. Here are some hotels to choose from for your beach stay:
1)Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa. Here's the link for further details http://www.penanghotels.com.my/shangri-las-rasa-sayang-resort-spa/
2)Golden Sands Resort. The sister hotel to Rasa Sayang, I believe it a 10 minutes walk the hotel. http://www.penanghotels.com.my/golden-sands-resorts/
There is a night bazaar which starts around 8pm onwards where you will find lots of stuff to shop around for. Its located along the road just outside of the hotels. And food variety is not a problem as there a whole bunch of hawker stalls (local favorites)to fully air conditioned restaurants that serve international cuisines.
And for nightlife entertainment, take a cab to the "Upper Penang Road" in Georgetown. This is where it all happens in Penang, hawker stalls, restaurants, coffee joints, pubs, clubs are all within walking distance.
Do post more details if needed and we'll try to assist you.

Hi tomyong
Thanks for that. We have already been to Malaysia, we went in January and we did stay in Penang and gave Langkawi a miss. We stayed at the Bayview Beach Resort in Batu Ferringhi and had an absolute ball. Couldn't fault the hotel in any way, while not the lap of luxury it had everything you needed and was spotlessly clean. We stayed at the Mandarin in KL and got our luxury there!
Penang was wonderful as you said. We spent our evenings trying the different restaurants and hawker stalls and wandering the night markets. We hired a car and driver from Ocean Jupiter's who took us all around the island each morning, then we spent the afternoons by the pool
It was a great holiday, wish it had been longer.
