Hi Guys
Hubby and I have decided to go to Penang in May and really have no idea about Penang at all so will have heaps of questions over the next few months I'd say.
First ones are: Hotel - would like a room with either living area to put the kids in at night (or else they won't sleep) or adjoining room (which travel agents say they can't confirm which makes it kinda hard to take the risk for little kids). I'm looking at the Park Royal and the Saya Rasang. The Park Royal looks lovely but hubby wants a 'flash' vacation and I thought the Saya Rasang looked quite flash. Can anyone give me info on these hotels, as to the 'flash' rating.
OK then the shopping. I'm a shopaholic but hubby gets a rash when he sees a shop, just kidding, but he may as well. Sooo I'll probably be leaving all the boys and going shopping, what kind of shopping is nearby to the hotels, and where should I most definitely go?
Then the kids - did you notice sleep and shopping came before them, what a terrible mother I am. Anyway, I would like to have a baby-sitter 'on hand' to allow us to have a bit of a vacation as well, can anyone let me know where you can get one, approx cost.
Oh, and what MUST I do whilst in Penang? Nightclubs and that kinda stuff are out for us but day stuff, restaraunts, etc.
We have travelled to Bali a dozen times so any 'comparison' type info is helpful, although I know you shouldn't compare.
Thank you all so much in advance for your help. I'm really looking forward to having a glimpse at Penang and want to know all there is to know before I go. lol

Rasa Sayang Shangrila, it's a very posh hotel, had a major renovation, was opened late lst year. You can check the Shangrila website for the pictures.
I dont think it's suitable for kids. It's more of a SPA Resort for couples.
The sister resort next door, Shangrila Golden Sands suit families more, but i would prefer the Park Royal for facilities for kids.
The hotels are all on the beach.
The beach area is quite a distance from town. There are nice shopping complexes around the island. Gurney Shopping Complex is the closest after coming down fr the beach , bout 30 minutes away or so or less depending on traffic. Ask the concierge for more new shopping complex.
Must dos - Visit Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Botanic Gardens...etc.
Bali and Penang aint the same, Bali is more of a beach resort, Penang is not really. The beaches at Penang are not really that nice anyway. There are night markets just outside the hotels you mentioned. Some hawkers and pubs there also.
Cheers.

Cheers, probably you can get a Family room at the Park Royal, they have big rooms, Bedding configuration includes 1 King + 1 Queen bed or 1 King + twin beds. Looks good.
Penang is a very hot island, hotter than Phuket if you ask me. The famous tourist hawkers food area are at Gurney Drive. You wont miss it.
If you plan to go anywhere, hire a personal guide. Public transportation isnt ideal on the island. Been a problem for years.

Well since Nautilus mentioned Gurney Drive, there is The Gurney Resort Hotel located in Georgetown, Penang. They have facilities for kids and also offer babysitting services. The Gurney hotel is just along the Gurney Drive where the hawker stalls and the Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex are located.
Visit their website:

I had been to Penang years ago and returned September 2006. The Rasa Sayang was opening the week after we left and looked beautiful. I don't think kids would be a problem. We stayed at the Golden Sands where I had previously stayed. Boy was I disappointed. The rooms were in much need of a renovation. The rest of the hotel was okay though. The pool area is very nice. At Batu Ferringhi you can't shop during the day as nothing is open. You have to go into Georgetown which is about 30 minutes away. Shopping not great but cosmetics good value. I won't be returning to Penang again as there is no comparison to Phuket, where you can shop whenever you feel like it. Leave hubby with the kids and go out. The food was great in Penang though and we ate every night at this great market place in about the middle of the street that sold every sort of meal imaginable. Yum The market stalls come alive when it gets dark and the shopping is great then. You just need to sightsee or chill out during the day.
Hope you have a great holiday

Yes Golden Sands is very very OLD.!!!
The hawker you ate is Gurney Drive. Tourist food at tourist prices, but still good.
Next time try the street at Sunway Hotel Penang,i think it's called New Lane, i will get back to you on that.
Hawkers at the whole street. Amazing and cheap.
