considering staying here for just a few nights. Most interested in clean accomodations, convenient location for food and sightseeing. Not worried about luxury. can someone comment on this choice?

Not many hotels in Ipoh and most of them are crap. Ipoh is not a big town, for food yes, sightseeing? I dont think so.
Famous hotel in Ipoh is the Heritage, http://www.heritage.com.my/ipoh/

i believe Arizonajay is refering to the Perak Hotel in Singapore, my country hehehe... http://www.peraklodge.com/
Location quite ok, near places like Suntec City, Bugis Junction, Bugis Village which is good for shopping, short distance away from Orchard road too, the shopping heaven of Singapore. For IT products can go to Sim Lim Square but gotta be careful, somethings cut throat prices can be quoted.

Thank you, yes, it is Singapore that I was referring to. We are not shoppers, but most interested in food, restaurants, hawkers and other more local unusual cultural sites. Perhaps zoo/botanical gardens as well. Is this an acceptable hotel for those things? BRW, we are two American couples, ages 50-65, definately NOT backpackers, but definately not into staying at Raffles or the like either.

Perak Hotel is a private run hotel in Little India, within walking distance of the Singapore History Museum and Sultan Mosque, and approximately 20 miles from Changi International Airport.

I've been to Singapore last year i have some suggestions to you,and i found out that the best place of sightseeing is the Sentosa island. you can go to Sentosa island by riding a cable car. and you can see the beautiful views, and experience the colorful culture and vibrant heritage of Singapore, And if you want to visit the underwater world. and the Dolphins go to Lagoon, and there you can watch the adorable pink dolphins perform their natural antics such as spy-hop, tail-flapping and vocalisation.

We stayed at the Perak Hotel in February 2008 as we had booked a stopover in Singapore on our way to Bali. Smallish but adequate rooms - spotlessly clean.
