Fishing gear is pretty cheap here. We have bought in Phuket Town. I can't remember the prices, but they were very reasonable, cheaper than Australia.

No, Patong deals pretty much purely with the tourist market - who generally don't go fishing. I get tackle at great prices, I make my own lures, and I get the bites instead of hubby's $200+ jobbies, 'makes him crazy!
I made up a lure with a large squid a couple of years ago (when the boat was in the water) and the fish that hit it, bit right through the trace. His fancy lures didn't get a tickle!

Sorry, I forgot to say, Phuket Town is probably 30 minutes from Patong, lots to get there, many shops selling fishing gear, but they're a bit spread out.
How do you intend to fish and what will you do with them? Keep in touch, we may be able to go fishing together!

I hope you gave it to Steve that your lure was the best, ha ha.
I have had some great fun fishing with home made lures and flies in my days as a fisherman, but I must admit, I must own hundreds of fancy coloured ones from the tackle shops, I cant walk into a tackle store without buying something and yes I will be buying some more on our next venture over there.
Heading over in 6 weeks, hope to cross paths at last.

Hi Wicksey85, My husband has bought lures, reels, rods, rigs and loads of fishing goodies at the Wat Naka weekend market. There is a large stall there that sells eveything you could ever need and all very cheap too. The market is not far from Phuket town, most Tuk Tuks know it and will wait for you - it cost us 500 baht return from Patong in April. The market is also great for souvenir shopping - they sell jewellery, watches, handbags, clothing, sunglasses and much much more at prices for the thousands of locals that visit - so you are not being charged the inflated Patong prices! Also there are loads of food stalls to get a taste of authentic thai food! I would definately recommend a trip to the market.
