Hi all just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on Weekday markets in Bangkok. Unfortunately we won't be in Bangkok on the weekend while we are there and I have heard that this is when all the great shopping markets are on. Does anyone have a suggestion for shopping during the weekdays? We are staying at the Siam @ Siam Hotel if that helps.
Cheers
Erin

Hi Erin Looks like you're about a 10-15min walk from MBK and Siam Paragon etc.Loads of great shopping in that area and if your interested Jim Thompsons house is on your way it's worth a look if you have the time, have a great holiday.

The night markets at Pratunam right next to the Indra Hotel are supposed to be great for fake designer gear and not too far from your hotel.

Pratunam is famous as a daytime wholesale district.
Although there will be a few sidewalk vendors at night, I wouldn't send you over there for a "night market" experience.

Patpong is pretty much a total tourist trap.
Not a lot of bargains to be found.
Pratunam, the area around the base of the Baiyoke, is where much of the clothing you'll find at Patpong is from.

Because Pratunam is considered "wholesale", the vendors don't bargain until you talk multiple pieces.
But, the single unit prices will start at what you might bargain for at Patpong.

If you happen to be around the Silom area at lunchtime, Soi Lalaisap might be fun.
It's where many of the office workers spend their extra cash during lunch.

Soi Lalaisap is just west of Bangkok Bank (Silom soi 7, I believe).

You'll find just about everything "fashion" there. On the south side of Petchaburi, you'll also find Platinum Fashion Mall.

The prices start out reasonable, close to what you might pay at MBK.
For big discounts, you will usually be looking at 3 or more, depending on the item and initial cost.
If you are buying T's or socks, you will need a few.
1,000 baht purses might have some bargaining room.

You can take the skytrain to "SIAM" and head into Siam Paragon, then Siam Center and Siam Discovery to Ratchadamri.
Pratunam is up Ratchadamri, covering the NW corner of Ratchadamri and Petchaburi, to the base of the Baiyoke Sky.

Patpong is a zoo.
It exists solely for fleecing tourists.

If you liked Patpong, you really ought to try to visit Lalaisap.
It's kind of what Patpong is supposed to be, without the tourist factor.
Lot's of stuff, but lite on the "souvenirs".

Take the skytrain to "SIAM" and transfer to the Southern train to continue to "SALA DAENG".
Hop off there and continue in the same direction until you pass Bangkok Bank (on the left).
You'll come across an alley with all sorts of vendors selling all sorts of stuff.

Lalaisap is a weekday market.
