I fell in love with Thailand...

I've researched a lot on Thailand and Bangkok mainly using this forum and would like to thank everyone who contributed. Now that I have returned from my trip... I have to say that I cannot believe how incredible Thailand was. Our journey started in Bangkok (Kao San Road) and then we went on to Phuket. We took our scuba diving course and enjoyed every minute under water. We rode scooters and drank Chang and Singha on the beach. We ate at Baan Rim Pa (to die for!). It was super expensive but it was a memorable meal. We watched a group of young boys fishing of the rocks and wrestling with each other while we ate our dinner. The lady boys were incredible! What I would give for those legs. We enjoyed a day at every beach but ultimately went back to our very secluded and small beach. There were a lot of Thai families who came and had picnics in the shade while their children played in the water. I fell in love with the sound of frogs in the jungle. I ate the best food of my life from a tiny and filthy restaurant every single day. Massaman, prawn soup, pad thai, tom yum, curries of every color, papaya salad, kanom krok, kan buang....Damn I miss the food. We found a chicken man who deep fried the most delicious chicken you can imagine. He changed his location daily so we often spent an hour trying to find him. I think he must put something highly addictive in his spice mix. Adventure every day. I've never had such a hard time going home. I loved Bangkok very much, too. I love the heat and the smells and the traffic. We went to the weekend market and I felt like I had died and gone to heaven not because of all the shopping but because it felt so good to sweat and be shoulder to shoulder with people who are simply in the same market. We saw aszhole tourists and kind and gentle Thai's. We also got ripped off once and we also met incredible tourists. I must admit that the traffic is nothing compared to China's traffic. There were times in China and Tibet when my heart almost popped from fear. Thailand not so much. Now I feel desperate to get back. I think a person must spend a minimum of three weeks, though. Minimum. In Italian there is is a saying "Il bel far niente" the beauty of doing nothing. I learned a kind of peace in Thailand. It felt like everything just kind of came together amidst the bustle and scams and seediness. Somehow in all of that I found peace. That is how I fell in love.

Hi Gretchen, I feel your pain and know another one is lost to S.E.A. For the moment I just sit here wishing I was there. China, now that's another story.
Glad you had a great time.

Great report Gretchen. I am sure most of us feel as you do. I am usually ready to go home from a holiday. But Thailand makes you feel connected and you just don't want to leave and then can't wait to get back. Pam

Hi Gretchen, I really enjoyed your report, especially as I had very similar experiences to you, which conjured the same emotions on my first trip. I have scoured the internet and holiday brochures since 2000 and nowhere else in the world can live up to the high standards that Thailand has set for me. Also I met the most dearest friend in my life in 2000 and have to return to see him. I am returning in 4 weeks and can't wait (your report took me back there for a while). Just hearing about the food sends my tastebuds into over drive!!! Your trip sounded great and I am glad you enjoyed your trip!!
