Hi everyone, I'm going to Phuket for the first time in June and would love to get some hints tips and advice (what to pack, where to go etc...).
I'm staying at the Patong Merlin (which came recommended by the Travel Agent) and will be there for 12 nights/13 days. Any advice the seasoned Phuket Traveller can give me would be great, especially for the solo traveller.

Check out Phuket Richard on Cathy and Gary's website. He offers some great trips through his dive shop. The Greys Starlight canoe tour is a must. Some don't like the Fantasea spectacular but my family loved it so if you have kids go along. One tip don't be talked into going too early or even to the dinner - not worth it. We have been dropped off too early both times and had time to kill - the second trip was in pouring rain and shelter was limited. Also do some research on taking a local boat to Freedom Beach just near Patong. Have not been myself but believe it worth it. Go to the loo out restaurants near Kata for spectacular views and a meal.

Hi Denise, make sure you have a pool view room at the Patong Merlin, you would be dissapointed with the alternative.
Buildings 4, 5, or 6 are the best, have a ball..Ronnie.

Hi all, Thanks for the advice so far... I have booked a pool view room. What sort of adaptor will I need to take to charge my phone, camera etc... The ones I've looked at, at the travel shops, some come with two flat and a round pin and others say take one with two round pins - I'm confused which one????
Also can anyone recommend any good cooking schools and tailors in patong or surrounding areas.
Thanks again everyone.

Hi onmyway Two pins only and think about taking a small power board with you to plug your phone camera etc.If you look in this part of the forum there is a good post on cooking schools. Enjoy your holiday RED

You can get a universal adaptor, which fits every plug in the world. I find some places have the two pins and others have the two flat pins, so a universal adaptor suits both. Many now have the universal power points anyway.
I have some information on my Virtual Tourist pages that could be of some use; http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9045f/160bcd/

Power adaptor can be bought for 100 baht $3 at the super market on Bangla Road. You can get them every 20 meters form the street vendors or market stalls.
Dont sweat the small things, the only thing i couldnt find was vegemite, everything else you can get at home is at your door step. Spend more time getting a comfy pair of thongs ( for the feet ) I went with the clothes i wore on the plane and my tooth brush, everything else i got there. Clothes really dont go past 36 waist for guys and size 10 for the girls so if your in this group or smaller take nothing but money, it really is all you need.

Hi Snoops, Depends on which show you are going to - can't recall exact times BUT ask whoever you are booked with what time the show actually starts. You will find they want to drop you off around 60 -90 minutes earlier. The place has a bit of a showgrounds, fun park atmosphere with some shops and rides but really not enough to fill in time. We got stuck there and it bucketed down with rain and there was very little shelter. I booked through Sarunya at Acacia Travel out the front oof Club Andaman. I always book with her - great rates, lovely girl.
