Count down is on for us for 4 July to depart for Phuket. Have been picking up some great tips from Forum. Thanks All. Hope to catch up at one of the Friday Night get Togethers. Have two teenage kids and they are asking if best to buy camera/phone here in Australia or in Thailand? Any advise would be great. Thanks.

Buy them in Australia, and do a search online for the best deal..If you buy them overseas the warranty will not be recognised if something goes wrong. Look at http://www.dinosaurdeals.com.au for some great bargins.

Even if they go to a dept store and work out what they want, if you do a search online you can definitely get cheaper than retail. The same can be done for iPods etc.

There is now another way to catch up with other travellers on a Sunday evening, so as not to interfere with Richard's business of Friday nights. It is a charity event to raise funds for local charities, the current project is for the women and children living with AIDS. At 600 baht per adult for great food, transfers, pool, live entertainment and other facilities, it's great value, even cheaper for children under 14. It is a family event.

I will make a posting with full details later, for anyone interested in doing something good whilst having a party and meeting fellow travellers.

Hi Tina,

You mention about people meeting up on Friday's and Sunday's? I'd appreciate it if you could forward these details to me as I start my travels beginning of June and as going solo am interested in meeting up with other people.

Many thanks,

Jude \:\)

Hi tumbi traveller,
When looking at phones you would need to do your research in Oz first.
This helps you choose the phone of your choice.
Make sure it is a minimum Tri-band.
Having said that I agree with the comments that should a problem arise it can be difficult to rectify.
Camera's are the same but you will find them cheaper, particularly in Bangkok.
Connectivity (eg, AA) and storage (eg, SD) are universal which makes camera's more simpler to purchase.
Hope this helps
regards

Yes, I'd buy my camera in Australia, although I did find the Samsung U700 was around $465, which I was quoted around $700 for in Aus. I didn't buy it because they didn't have silver, which is the colour I wanted.

If you're after a fantastic camera, I just got the Panasonic Lumix 10x optical zoom. It is small, lightweight, fast to turn on and takes great pictures. The rechargeable battery lasts so long, the best I've ever had! I absolutely love this camera. I paid $500 at Harvey Norman with a 16gb card and extra battery.

Tina,
Although i am a Samsung fan I would stay away from the U700 as a high percentage end up going back for warranty. (I am in telco) so have some knowledge of this. I am looking forward to checking out some of the phones when I get over there and comparing the prices and quality etc. I may not be able to pick a fake or good quality handbag (leave that to the gf) but will be fine with the mobiles \:\) I am also buying my new camera here before I go.

Thanks for that Adrian. I do love that phone though. I think there must be a new model about to come out. Will wait for that. I need a phone that's compatible with my car to use through the steering wheel/radio.

As to the camera, I checked, my card is 2gb, not 16! : ) The price included an extra few years warranty too. Make sure you check out that camera, it's wonderful. Better than more expensive ones I've had, including Olympus and Konica/Minolta.

I bought my canon before I headed over at Christmas, and it takes marvellous photos, would even say better than my Fuji S5000 which has a 10x optical zoom.
