Hi, I am thinking about accepting a teaching position in Thailand. I will mainly be located between Bangkok and Phuket. I was wondering how safe it is for me to be there mostly alone because I won't really know anyone. I will be there for five months and I am a 21 year old female. Is there anything that I would need to watch out for or any safety precautions I should take?

Also, is there anything that I need to worry about healthwise when I travel to Thailand, or anything that I need to worry about with the political situation? I checked on several websites, but the most updated information I could find was from 2006 and it listed political unrest, terrorist attacks, and the Avian Flu. If anyone knows anything about the current situation for all this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

How safe you will be depends mostly on you. If you find yourself getting into marginal situations at home, there are plenty to find here also.

The "political unrest" is pretty low key. Around the government district, there is periodic traffic congestion due to protests. It's more of an inconvenience than a threat.

The "coup" was more of a peace keeping gesture, when those not protesting were tiring of the protests. When everyday business and traffic gets affected, something had to be done!

The "terrorist" activities are around the far south and not directed at the West. It a separatist movement.

The bird flu hasn't taken off (no pun intended). Although very serious, the WHO press is mostly to educate and keep people aware. Hopefully, it will be like the "Millennium Bug" and all the concern and preparation will overcome it.

If you mind your manners, respect local customs, and use common sense, you'll find Thailand to be quite safe.
