A friend and i are looking at heading to Thailand over the Christmas new years break. We've only just started our research and we're looking for the best and most economical way to spend our time there, we'll have 10 days all up (not long enough i know!!) and are thinking of flying in and out of Bangkok. We're both very experienced travelers and would like to experience as many things as possible in the time we have. A couple of the main things i'd like to know are 1) What is the best way to get around? 2) Main places that we should include in our trip 3) Good places to stay, eat and visit.

Would love to hear from all you experienced Thailand travelers!!

Hi Anna65,

In Bangkok I would highly recommend a tour of the grand palace and vinmanmek mansion as well as some temples such as Wat Pho.

The best way to get around is probably tuk tuk or taxi but depending on where you stay walking may be an option if you don't mind the humidity although you can walk through many of the big department stores.

I have always booked tours through a company so they come and pick you up and drop you back but this time round I have contacted a driver/ tour guide to take us around. Works out cheaper and you don't have to wait for a whole bus load of people.

In Bangkok I have stayed at the Montien and Pathuwnam Princess. I'm going back to PP this trip as well, purely due to the friendly staff and location. It connects with MBK, a shopper's paradise.

Hope this helps,

Pebbles

About the most economical way to get around Bangkok, itself, is by bus. Thaiways Magazine's ->map<- will give you the routes. You can often find a free, paper copy at many hotels and tourist kiosks.

Around the country, trains are probably your best bet. Buses are cheaper, but there is a lot of theft reported.

Around Bangkok, ->my little map<- will give you some , mostly cheap, dining ideas.

Hi Anna65, I have been to BK for a few times.

Besides BK and Chiang Mai, you can think about one day tour in Pataya as its really a good experience at the Floating market!

BK is great for shopping, if you r looking for clothing, do visit Baiyoke Area.

Going in Dec is a great time!! Its normally more cooling during the time \:\) good choice!! As for hotels, my hubby deal with an Online third party which given very very cheap hotel prices.. let see if i can get it up here later \:\)

I will be going again to BK next week!!! ahahaha..

As per Pebbles we also stayed at the Pathumwan Princess and found it very central and handy to shopping etc. Obviously many ways to get around, we mainly caught taxis, but only ones with meter running as it is very cheap around 45Baht to 80 baht to get to most places within the city. The downside is the traffic and it can take a little while during peak times (which seem to be most of the time). Many say the skytrain is good although we didnt use it this time. We only did the shopping this time but next year we are going to visit more outlying areas.
