Hi all, we are currently in Patong and have purchased some nice little statues to bring back home. They are wooden. Can anyone tell me whether there will be a problem getting these back through Aussie customs? Are there particular types of woods not accepted? What have been everyone elses experiences of taking these types of items back? We will check back on the forum tomorrow if anyone can help. PS weather is awesome here right now. Adrian

Hi Adey68,
As Aussie1 said mango wood is fine but declare it anyway. I have brought back a few wooden items and declared them.
I got some of the wooden bowls and tall vases they look black or dark brown with a carved pattern in them. Customs just tapped them upside down on the counter to check for wood worm and make sure no shaving came out and we were good to go!!!
You will be fine, most times we fine the declare line shorter then the nothing to declare!!
Enjoy your holiday and happy shopping,
Pebbles.

Thanks, we have some mango wood items, the ones we are worried about are 2 buddha status which are teak and have no varnish on them. Will declare all and keep fingers crossed i guess. Adrian

I have rented instruments in NZ for practice purposes in the past. Although you often have to pay for a term's rental, the cost is not usually excessive for 2 months. That saves me worrying about the rapid changes of humidity Japan/aircraft/NZ - it was enough to make a violin sound "funny" for a few days.

Hi Adey68 As Michelle says "declare everything" And if you have time cause after all you are in Patong on holidays please go to this site (DAFF - AUS Gov; Dept of Ag, Fish & Forest) and it will also help with some answers for you. (no I am not employed by them - lol) http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/faqs Wish I was there regards os2go
